From the Chairman of the Board

Once again, another year has come and gone with so much progress happening at the United Way of Butler County! This year our Impact Councils have made significant progress in the areas of Education, Financial Stability, and Connecting People.

Financial Stability began working toward a plan to generate more resources and help more people get and keep their jobs. We are pleased to announce that the United Way will launch a Child Care Scholarship Fund to help provide child care for families trying to get back into the workforce who either don’t meet qualifications for public support or are on a waiting list. They are also working on an Accountability Plan for housing and utility assistance that includes a step-down program for support. The plan works toward helping individuals and families be less reliant on long-term public support through education and housing counseling, and will enable more families to receive emergency assistance.

The Education Impact Council is working toward launch of a Summer Camp and Afterschool Scholarship Fund that will enable more children to attend the many summer programs offered throughout the County. “Women United”, our newly formed women’s leadership initiative, launched a career-mentoring program with Butler Junior High Students, called “Back to Your Future”, which is sure to lend to the success of our youth.

And, after many long years, we are excited about the launch of 2-1-1, an easy-to-remember number to call for Human Services information and referral, in Southwest Pennsylvania. We’ve been working side-by-side with United Ways in Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties toward the launch and are especially grateful to the Center for Community Resources for their support of this effort.

We have been so fortunate to have the leadership of David Dorko for the past year as the Chairman of the Board. Unfortunately, Dave has been relocated to Louisiana and had to leave his post at the United Way of Butler County. Dave was instrumental in moving our organization forward as he had for many other United Way organizations over his career. His insight and experience will be missed, but we wish Dave and his family great success and happiness in this new chapter of their lives.

As I step in to fill some very big shoes, I can only hope to continue to lead the United Way in the right direction. Each small success achieved leads us to bigger and better ways to impact our community. We are very fortunate to have Leslie, Tammy, Kathleen, Sherry & Barb to manage our day to day activities, and a very strong Board of Directors who are engaged in the mission of this organization and will take us into the future. I am excited about the opportunity that 2011-2012 holds, and am thankful for the opportunity to serve you.

In Service,

Jennifer Roxbury, NexTier Bank
Acting Chairman
